Vhaelmark and the Oänmar
Vhaelmark and the Oänmar

The Horsefolk of the Old Grass
Long before the city-states raised their towers, before the Sundering tore the Weave, there were the Oänmar. They are among the oldest cultures on Adamah and the least changed, and their world begins and ends with the horse.
The Oänmar hold the Vhaelmark: a long band of forest and open grass running down the heart of Solehaquin, between the Indigo Permafrost in the north and the Caelunora Desert in the southwest. It is good land, deep-soiled and well-watered, threaded with rivers and old woods, and they have kept it longer than most nations have existed. They live beside their herds and move with the grazing and the seasons, and they guard their ground with a precision brutality that has taught every hungry neighbor to look elsewhere.
They are not primitive, and they are not naive. They know the magitech world pressing on every border. They trade into it and refuse most of it, and they have reasons for both. An Oänmar rider will carry a blade older than the Holy Kingdom of Enoch and know exactly what the drones overhead are worth. Their insularity is a choice, made and remade every generation, not an accident of distance.
No Crown, Only the Kindreds
The Oänmar have no single ruler. They are an alliance of great families bound by a mutual-aid pact as old as the Vhaelmark itself. Over the ages, hundreds of smaller familial clans settled into the four Kindreds known today: Ursoa, Lutran, Aquille, and Leothera. Each holds a broad territory whose exact borders an outsider would never find.
The Kindreds differ, and they squabble. But let danger come to one Oänmar and any other will ride to them without asking which Kindred they hail from. They are Oänmar before they are anything else. That is how the Vhaelmark has stayed unconquered while its neighbors circled, age after age.
The Four Kindreds
Ursoa. The high cold marches of the far northeast, where the grass gives way to the edge of the Permafrost. Their colors are purple and black. Ursoa is insular even to the other Kindreds, and half of what the rest of the Vhaelmark believes about them is guesswork. They breed the great warhorses, towering mounts that dwarf their southern cousins, and an Ursoa rider who ventures out is sought the world over as a mercenary and a caravan guard. They are not craftfolk so much as rangers, moving far and wide along their borders, and they trade in the herbs they gather and the deep dyes and pigments they render from what they forage.
Lutran. The river country north of the Silvermere. Their colors are blue and brown. No Oänmar rides better, but the Lutran have also mastered the water in a way the others never have. Their horses run tall and light-footed, sure among the rocks and streams that lace their land. They build the finest rivercraft in the Vhaelmark, from small fishing boats to rafts broad enough to ferry a whole string of horses across water too deep to ford, and they hire out as guides to any who would hunt the great fish and serpents of the Silvermere. Their weavers make nets, baskets, and even armor from the river reeds they know so well.
Aquille. The central mountains and the high valleys around them. Their colors are green and white. Aquille ride shaggy, clever mountain ponies, and they keep a second bonded tradition beside the horse: they raise and hunt with birds of prey whose bloodlines run back centuries. Those lines have grown strange and sharp over the generations, far beyond their wild kin, and it is whispered that some of the oldest birds can work a rough magic of their own. Aquille artisans are known for stone and gem work, inlays and mosaics of real beauty, and you will find crystal and bead worked into nearly everything an Aquille owns, from saddle to hearth.
Leothera. The southern grass, running down to the shore of the Silvermere and out toward the Caelunora Desert. Their colors are red and gold. Less war-minded than the northern Ursoa, the Leothera are no less dangerous: hunters of the open plain who ride to the kill in concert, trained from childhood to move as one. To see Leothera on the horizon is to learn you were already surrounded. Living so near the desert powers, it is a testament to their guerilla ambushes that their land has stayed under the Oänmar banner at all. They make the finest leather in the world, and for all their reputation they are the most open of the Kindreds, keepers of music and of the spoken histories, which they perform in dance on the nights that matter.
The Trade Cities
The Vhaelmark holds two cities, both run by the Council of Elders and managed in turn by representatives of all four Kindreds, though they sit on Lutran and Leothera ground. This is where the Oänmar meet the outside world and where the real trade is done.
Aelnor, the northern city, on Lutran land. Aelsyn, the southern city, on Leothera land, and home to Evelyn Brightwind, the renowned soul-healer whose name is known well past the Vhaelmark's borders.
Within a Kindred
The Warden leads a Kindred, answerable for the defense and the management of its stretch of the grass. The Warden is elected by the people and confirmed by the Council, and serves for life unless the people call a vote to end it. When a Warden dies, the Kindred holds the First Fire after the funeral. After a communal feast, any member may cast their name into the fire, nominating themselves, sometimes with a dance and a speech and sometimes with neither. When every name is in, the Kindred votes, all members aged sixteen and older, until one candidate holds a two-thirds majority. That is the new Warden.
Three offices are appointed by the Warden:
- The Leader of the Wind commands the hunting parties, raises the defense when it is needed, and trains the young in riding, hunting, and fighting.
- The Leader of the Elohim organizes the artisans and craftsfolk and teaches the young the heritage of their Kindred.
- The Leader of the Earth oversees cultivation and foraging, keeps the histories, and trains the young in the old dances and the working of the land.
The Härtimus
The Council of Elders, the Härtimus, is made of three members from each Kindred. Any Oänmar may be consulted , and they are called on to settle disputes between Kindreds and to decide how the Vhaelmark deals with other lands and powers. A member may be raised to the Härtimus at any age, may choose to leave it, or may be removed by their own Kindred if that is the Kindred's will. They move between their home ground and the city of Aelsyn as the work demands.
The Vaelfoal
The Oänmar keep an old strand of the Eternal Cycle, older than any temple's version of it. They do not believe a worthy soul simply passes on. They believe it can turn back into the world through the herd.
When an Oänmar reaches the natural end of their life, they may petition the Härtimus for the bonding. If the Council finds them worthy, a mare in foal is found and an all-night ceremony is held. There is a feast, and songs, and dances, and the whole Kindred gathers, the Härtimus of that heritage among them, to honor the life of the one who is leaving. The artisans make a work that tells that life, in paint or weaving or leather or mosaic. Then a vigil is kept through the dark while the petitioner and the mare sleep together beneath the stars.
If the Ohros approve, and the old magic holds, the petitioner's Elohim unbinds from its failing body and settles into the unborn foal, to live a second life. What remains of the human is an empty husk, buried in the light of the next morning. The mare is tended day and night until she foals, and the newborn horse is a Vaelfoal.
The Vaelfoal are sacred and revered. They are stronger and cannier than any common horse, and wiser than most people, and they belong to no one but themselves. A Vaelfoal may choose to run wild and keep its own watch over the grass, or it may choose to bond itself to a living member of the Kindred. To be chosen by a Vaelfoal is the highest honor an Oänmar can be given, and those who are chosen often rise, in time, to become Wardens or to sit on the Härtimus.
The Long Shelter: Why the Horse Still Lives
Every true horse on Adamah is an Oänmar horse.
Before the Sundering, horses ran across half the world. Then the war came, and the Weave tore, and the radiological and arcane fallout swept the land. The great beasts died, or they did not die and became something worse: the Ferine, twisted by the magic that pooled in the poisoned places. In the space of a single terrible decade, the horse should have ended with everything else.
It did not, because the Oänmar were already what they were. Already insular, already bound to their herds, already holding a defensible band of deep forest and sheltered valley at the heart of the continent. When the sky turned, they drove the herds into the old woods and the cave systems and the lee of the mountains and the hidden basins of the Silvermere. They rationed. They culled the sick before the sickness could spread. They kept the bloodlines clean by hand and by grief, and they buried more of their own than they will say. When the Age of Reclamation dawned and the survivors of Adamah crawled back into the light, the true horse, unmutated and whole, existed in exactly one place.
That is the quiet fact under all the diplomacy. The cavalry of the city-states, the prized steeds of the HKE, the working stock of a hundred rebuilt towns, all of it traces back to Oänmar herds. It is why the Vhaelmark is courted and pressured and never quite conquered. Burn the Oänmar out and you burn the last true herd on the planet, and every power that circles them knows it. The precision brutality is not pride. It is the whole world's inheritance, held at knifepoint by the only people who kept it alive.
- Prehistory / Ancient Era: The Oänmar settle the grasslands of central Solehaquin and bind the four Kindreds under the first mutual-aid pact, founding the Vhaelmark. One of the oldest continuous cultures on Adamah.
- 2023–2033 CE, the Sundering War: As the fallout spreads and Adamah's great beasts die or turn Ferine, the Oänmar drive their herds into shelter and preserve the last true horses. Remembered among the Kindreds as the Long Shelter.
- Age of Reclamation (2033 CE onward): The Vhaelmark emerges as the sole source of unmutated horses on Adamah, making the Oänmar quietly indispensable to every rising power, and a target for all of them.
